YCharts In The Community: Brooklyn Queens Land Trust
Our New York City team is really good at building an industry-leading investment research platform — we already knew that. But as we learned last week, it turns out they’re pretty good gardeners too.
When YCharts’ software engineering team looked for a way to give back, they thought it would also be a great opportunity to get out into the community — and all were eager to trade fluorescent light for sunlight.
Our team was introduced to Brooklyn Queens Land Trust and immediately saw the value in their work. BQLT’s mission is to ensure the conservation and preservation of open spaces, act as a steward, and establish a community of gardeners in Brooklyn and Queens, in perpetuity.
Just a couple weeks later, our engineers were on their hands and knees, pulling weeds and getting dirty at United Herkimer Garden Club, located in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn.
The YCharts team spent the day with members of the community, clearing the overgrown areas of the garden club and building wood planters for flowers and vegetables.
Thomas Jakeway, a Senior Software Engineer, led the efforts to organize the day at United Herkimer. “I’m really proud of all the work we accomplished in just one day,” Thomas said, “we traded the A/C and comfortable chairs for hours of weeding in the heat.” As you can see below, Thomas isn’t lying about how much work got done.
The YCharts team proved they’re more than just excellent software engineers — they’re prolific landscapers as well.
When a stubborn and rotting peach tree needed removal, Senior Software Engineer, Lucas Brambrink channeled his inner Paul Bunyan and wrestled it free from the dirt.
Thomas added that a highlight of the day was working as a team with the community members. Our engineering team works closely together every day, but the change of environment and community interaction was a fun change of pace.
YCharts is committed to being an active part of our community. While we enjoy enabling smarter investment decisions for our clients, we’re very proud to partner with those around us to build a better place to live.
We’re growing! YCharts has offices in both Chicago and New York City. For more information, check out the YCharts Career Page.
